An Alabama man and his father went before a judge Monday after authorities say he fatally shot his wife and seriously injured their 18-month-old daughter over the weekend.
Tristen Stewart, 25, is charged with capital murder in the Friday night slaying of his wife, Taylor Dudley Stewart at the couple’s Marion County home.
Stewart’s father, 69-year-old Kenneth Stewart, is charged with aiding and abetting on capital murder and obstruction of governmental operations.
A judge on Monday ordered Tristen Stewart to remain held without bond.
Kenneth Stewart’s bond is set at $1.5 million, and authorities said his charges could be upgraded.
The shooting happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of Stewart Road in Hamilton. Both father and son listed that location as their addresses.
Charging documents against Tristen Stewart state he shot his wife multiple times.
Kenneth Stewart, authorities said, drove his son away from the scene of the homicide to help him evade capture and then returned to home about an hour later and called 911 to report the shooting.
“Kenneth Stewart intentionally gave false statements to law enforcement to mislead them and slow them down,” so that Tristen Stewart had more time to get away, records state.
Tristen Stewart was booked into the Marion County Jail at 2:37 p.m. Saturday, and his father booked in just minutes later.
Stewart’s arrest followed a 15-hour manhunt.
Marion County Sheriff Kevin Williams said Monday that the toddler girl has undergone surgery at a hospital out of state and is doing well.
