One Woman’s Opinion

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News for letting me publish my column each week and to the many who read this great paper. This was a nice week weather wise with signs of summer being on its way. I am a true Southerner and love the summer weather. The months are passing very fast and I need to get things in order and clean out stuff I have saved for years. I am thankful everyday for Life, Health, Faith, Family and Friends.

MY LIFE IN POLITICS
Many people ask me how I got so involved in politics over the years. I was raised in the country with great parents who were very strict. When I married in 1958, husband was drafted into the Army for 2 years. He was stationed in downtown Philadelphia and I worked for an insurance company there. After 2 years we came to Huntsville where my husband went to work for NASA as a Branch Chief of the Computer Lab and I worked for Teledyne. In February 1966 he and three other NASA employees flew a private plane to the Daytona 500 races. On the way back a storm came up and the plane was sent to the Columbus, Georgia airport to land but the plane ran out of gas and all 4 were killed. My husband and I owned 3 rental houses on Governors Drive near the Post Office where the many buildings are being built today. I was told if I had the neighborhood rezoned, I could charge more a month. I became a notary and got 88 signatures from the neighborhood people supporting the rezoning of Warren Park. I went to the Zoning Department and was told that the Interstate was coming thru where our rental houses were located and they could not be rezoned. After being turned down 3 times by the zoning board I promised I would get involved in politics to keep our politicians honest and treating people fairly. I learned a lot about how politics works for the normal people and how big money politics works. I had not planned on being in politics this long but I was told later by the City Attorney they wished they had rezoned the property like I asked.

It is surprising how our city, state and country leaders keep changing our laws for the worst. Keep up with the candidates in office and the ones running for office so you can vote for the right candidates at the next election. Election dates have changed for several cities so make sure to keep a lookout for when your area votes.

DEMOCRATS – REPUBLICANS
I wish all politicians would think and work for the people with some common sense. Today our country is in a terrible mess and it seems our leaders are not speaking out and caring enough for our country. Who cares if you are Democrat or Republican as long as you are working in the best interest for the public?

CITY OF HUNTSVILLE
I missed the last Council meeting but I watched the rerun on Friday and our city is becoming a big mess like our country. Look at the parking garage and Governors Drive development. The Mayor, City Council, Planners Engineering and Administrative Aide are ruining our wonderful City.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
