One Woman’s Opinion

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers. We had a beautiful week but the wind and temperature on Saturday could mean we are getting ready for a cold winter.  I am a true Southerner and cannot stand much cold weather.  We need to get ready for winter though because it isn’t that far away.

My daughter called and told me she saw on the news that Dr. Richard Showers passed away.  This is a sad day in Huntsville, Alabama. Please pray for his family and his loving friends. He will be missed by many and will always be remembered as one of the best City Councilman we have ever had. He cared for everyone across the city and showed great interest in what the citizens in his District needed and wanted.  He was a caring person and was loved by many. I am so glad I got to know him.

CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS

Please forgive me for being so outspoken at the Council meetings but so much is happening in the city without public input.  I do love all our leaders and tell them so at every meeting.

All the City Council persons except Kling voted to change the code for the “Communications from the Public” at the Council meetings. Under the new code the public can only speak once per meeting. You can either speak on agenda items at the beginning of the meeting or you can choose to speak at the end of the meeting on whatever topics you would like. However, if you wait to speak your one time at the end of the meeting, they will have already voted on all the items.  I hope they are happy. It is obvious they do not want to hear from the public and do not care what we have to say.

Mr. John Meredith was the son of civil rights icon and was elected President of City Council at last Thursday night Council meeting.  He was elected to the council in 2020 to represent District 5.  Robinson was elected as President pro-tem and Bill Kling was elected as the third presiding officer.  The council President receives a salary of $45,712, about $7,600 more than other council members.  Meredith defeated incumbent Will Culver in a runoff for District 5 when Will Culver fell 18 votes short of a majority in the general election.

CITY PROPERTY

Please call the Mayor and the Council Members and tell them not to tear down the big Parking Garage in front of City Hall.  They will begin demolishing the parking garage starting the first of November. They will also be tearing down our beautiful City Hall and building one back on the parking garage property.  I think this deal is stupid and is causing a lot of pressure on my mind. They need to build the new city hall back on same property where it is now with some of the marble from the existing building. What developer is wanting this city property?  Please help me block this before it is too late.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
