Decatur police say a pedestrian was intentionally struck and killed in the parking lot of a business Thursday night.

The incident happened at about 9 p.m., according to police. Officers were called to Walmart Neighborhood Market, 1203 6th Ave. S.E., after someone reported a person being struck by a vehicle.

Arriving officers found Sherry Sain dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Sain, Preston Lamar Nelson, 38, of Huntsville, attempted to flee the parking lot but a bystander stopped the vehicle, when then stalled, police said.

According to investigators, Nelson pulled into the parking lot and parked in a handicapped spot near the front. Nelson sat in his vehicle until Sain walked directly behind the vehicle. Then he accelerated rapidly, striking her and another vehicle.

Police say there is no known connection between Nelson and Sain.

Nelson has been charged with murder and is being held in the Morgan County Jail on $500,000 bond.
