ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers. I hope everyone had a great week. I am thankful to be alive and in good health. Be thankful for every day and give thanks to God. That means a lot.

SCHOOLS DECISIONS
Schools have started and Huntsville City Schools is making COVID-19 decisions on requiring the students to wear mask. The parents are feeling left out and are having to choose whether to keep their children home using virtual classes or send them to school with all the restrictions. According to the news, vaccination rates are up across Alabama since July. Our children’s education is very important and so is their health.

HOSPITALS
The Alabama Hospitals are already reporting shortage in care for patients and shortness of staff is part of the problem.  It is hard to find people to work right now. The employees are frustrated and tired, as the COVID-19 does not seem to be getting better.  Many people have had shots, but many have not. Getting vaccinated is a hard decision to make and the new wave of Covid is a big concern. Please pray about this and make the right decision.

CITY BUDGET
Having attended a work session last Thursday night on the budget coming due, I was surprised there were no figures shown on the screen. We have always had work sessions over the years letting the public know what is going on, but not anymore. Does anyone know how much city property has been given to developers and how much is owed on the parking garages we built for them. When it comes to the city debt, we will never get the truth from anyone.

REDSTONE GATEWAY
There were two building permits issued in July for $43 M for construction planned at Redstone Gateway. The construction of new offices and professional space for Redstone Gateway is located just off Interstate 565 at the Arsenals main gate.  Are we trying to take over the Arsenal now?

PARKING GARAGE DOWNTOWN
Why is the Mayor of Huntsville and City Council tearing down the big parking garage in front of the City Hall building?  It is set to be torn down the first of September.  Dale Strong has begged Battle to leave the parking garage as it is because the Courthouse needs the parking. They say the parking garage is in bad shape, but it would not take very much for improvements and is in a great location. The big parking lot for the downtown Regions Bank is about the same age as the city parking garage. This parking garage does not need to be torn down and we should rebuild the city hall where it is, instead of our leaders giving the property to their friends.  I see too much going on in Government.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
